Filmmaker Kenneth Branagh is delving deep into his childhood with Belfast, the semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama coming to theaters this weekend.
Written and directed by Branagh, Belfast tells the story of a young boy and his working-class family growing up in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s. Starring Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Morgan, and newcomer Jude Hill as the young boy, Belfast is sure to satisfy those who love nostalgic trips back to Britain in the ’60s.
The movie even has the classic rock soundtrack to match—Belfast native Van Morrison wrote a new song just for the film, which also features eight other classic Van Morrison hits.
It’s hard to resist a trip down memory lane, and even harder to resist those charming Irish accents, so here’s everything you need to know about where to watch Belfast and when to expect Belfast on streaming.
What’s the release date for Belfast?
In March, Focus Features officially set the United States theatrical release date of “Belfast” for November 12, 2021. The international distribution will be handled by Universal, with theatrical release dates abroad to be presumably announced later. “Belfast” will also premiere in September at the Toronto Film Festival.
Unlike many films set to be released in fall and winter later this year, “Belfast” didn’t see any delays from the COVID-19 pandemic. But with Delta and other variants still counting as a factor, it’s possible that the film could see the November date pushed back further if there’s another surge.
WHERE TO WATCH BELFAST:
For now, the only way to watch Belfast is to go to a movie theater. Belfast will open in theaters in the U.S and the U.K. on Friday, November 12. You can find tickets at a theater near you here.
After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to rent Belfast on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, and more.
WILL BELFAST BE ON HBO MAX?
No. Belfast is a Focus Features/Universal movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. While HBO Max—which is owned by Warner Media—has been the streaming home for blockbuster Warner Bros. movies like Dune, it will not be the streaming home for Universal movies like Belfast. While the movie may be on HBO Max someday, it won’t be any time soon.
WHEN WILL BELFAST BE STREAMING?
There is not yet a digital or VOD release date for Belfast, and it’s hard to say when you’ll be able to stream the Kenneth Branagh movie. That said, you likely won’t have to wait too long.
Belfast is a Universal movie, and previously Universal movies had been released on digital after 17 days in theaters, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The studio has not been following that schedule as consistently as it previously had been—the recent Universal movies Dear Evan Hansen and The Card Counter both landed on VOD about one month after opening in theaters. If Belfast follows a similar pattern, you can expect to be able to rent the movie on VOD in mid-to-late December.
That said, other Universal movies like the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect went to digital after just two weeks in theaters. Still, other Universal movies, like the M. Night Shyamalan thriller Old, took over two months to release on digital.
Who’s in the cast of Belfast?
Based on the names listed, “Belfast” should have an extremely strong and capable cast. Jamie Dornan (“Fifty Shades of Grey”) leads the film, as does Golden Globe nominee Caitriona Balfe. Longtime Branagh collaborator Dame Judi Dench is also named as part of the ensemble, as is the Shakespearean actor — and Mance Rayder himself — Ciaran Hinds. The last time Dench worked with Branagh was in 2020’s “Artemis Fowl.”
Also announced is newcomer Jude Hill, a child actor with only one credit prior to “Belfast” (a short film called “Rian”).
We’ll find out more about each cast member beyond assigned names when “Belfast” opens in November.

What’s the plot of Belfast?
According to Deadline, “Belfast” is a coming-of-age story that focuses on a boy’s life as chaos unfolds in the capital of Northern Ireland in the late-1960s.
The film is personal to Branagh, as he was born in Belfast and moved away when he was nine to escape the Troubles there — a period of irregular war between various factions in the nationalist conflicts of Northern Ireland.
- Jude Hill’s character of Buddy appears the central role of the movie, as he’s a child experiencing the chaos of the times. Branagh told the Belfast Telegraph that “It’s to some extent a look at people and a place in tumult through the eyes of a nine-year-old movie-mad kid.”
We’ll discover what “Belfast” is actually like though when it comes out Stateside on November 12th.
