It’s Jared Leto‘s turn to be a Marvel anti-hero—kinda—in the upcoming Sony superhero movie Moribus, which opens in theaters this weekend.
Originally introduced as a villain in the Spider-Man comics, “Morbius: The Living Vampire,” aka Michael Morbius, eventually became a brooding anti-hero with his own comic series. Dr. Morbius is a former award-winning biochemist who kinda, sorta, accidentally gets turned into a vampire while attempting to cure his rare blood disease. Oopsie-daisy! You know how these things go. Let’s just pray that Leto isn’t taking his “method acting” to the point of drinking human blood.
In addition to Leto starring as Morbius himself, the Morbius movie cast also includes Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. The film was directed by Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosa, with a script by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.
After the success of Venom, another film franchise built around a Spider-Man villain, Sony no doubt has high hopes for Morbius. Here’s what you need to know about how to watch Morbius and when to expect Morbius on streaming.
Morbius 2022 release date
Morbius releases exclusively in theatres on April 1, 2022. Sony’s upcoming Morbius is set to arrive in theaters on April 1, 2022, but the perfect release date for the vampire-based Marvel movie would be later in the year. While Tony Holland MCU-set Spider-Man era has been jointly shepherded by Sony and Marvel, the former has gone all-in on movies centered on well-known Marvel villains. Beginning with 2018’s Venom, Sony followed up with the 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, with Morbius and Kraven the Hunter following behind them.
Originally scheduled to be released on July 10, 2020, Morbius has had its release date pushed back seven times as a result of the ongoing pandemic. While Morbius is dropping numerous trailers and marketing and seems set to arrive on its slated April 1 date, the vampire-centric movie had at one point been scheduled for October 8, 2021. Considering what kind of character Morbius is, October would be the ideal time frame for his big-screen debut.
Where to Watch The Morbius 2022 Movie?
Right now, the only place to watch Morbius is in a movie theater when it opens on Friday, April 1. You can find a showing at a movie theater near you here. After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to purchase Morbius on digital platforms like Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu.
When Will Be Morbius Streaming
The short answer is: We don’t know. A digital release date for Morbius has not yet been announced. Another Sony Movie, Uncharted, will be available to rent for $19.99 on VOD on April 26, after about two months in movie theaters. If Morbius follows a similar release strategy, you might be able to rent the movie for $19.99 around early June 2022.
It’s also possible you will see Morbius on Disney+ and Netflix. Read on for more info.
Will Morbius Be on Disney+ or Hulu?
Yes, eventually—but you’ll have to wait. Last year, Disney made a deal with Sony to bring Spider-Man and other Sony titles to Disney Plus after the movies are released on Netflix, beginning with Sony’s 2022 release slate. The deal will bring Sony’s titles, such as Uncharted, to Disney platforms for their Pay 2 windows, which should be a little over 18 months after the movie opens in theaters. Therefore, you may see Morbius on the Disney streaming platforms around September or October 2023.
Will Morbius Be on HBO MAX?
No. Morbius is a Sony movie, not a Warner Bros. movie. Also, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. (Last year, Warner Bros. opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.)
IS Morbius on NETFLIX?
Not right now—but it will be someday. While you certainly won’t see Morbius on Netflix before it releases on video-on-demand, last year Sony signed a deal to bring the studio’s 2022 film slate to Netflix during the “Pay 1 window,” which used to be 18-months after the film’s theatrical release, but could be even sooner, given that most theatrical windows have been reduced from 90 days to 45 days during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, it’s likely you will see Morbius on Netflix in 2023.
In other words, it may be a while before Morbius is available to stream at home. If you’re dying to see Jared Leto as a vampire ASAP, well, you could probably just look at a picture of Jared Leto on the internet. But you also might want to see Morbius in theaters.
What’s Morbius About?
Morbius is a 2022 American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Morbius, the Living Vampire, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is the third film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, it stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Morbius becomes a vampire after curing himself of a rare disease in the film.
After announcing plans for a new shared universe of films inspired by Spider-Man characters beginning with Venom (2018), Sony began developing a film based on Morbius. Sazama and Sharpless had written a script by November 2017, and Leto and Espinosa officially joined in June 2018. Work began in earnest at the end of the year with further casting, ahead of production starting in London in February 2019. Filming was confirmed to have been completed by June 2019.
