Saul “Canelo” Alvarez returns to light-heavyweight this weekend, as the undisputed super-middleweight champion looks to add Dmitry Bivol’s WBA title to his collection. Canelo, who has held world titles in four weight classes, previously fought at light-heavyweight in 2019, stopping Sergey Kovalev to win the WBO belt.
Last time out, the Mexican superstar knocked out Caleb Plant late on to become the first fighter at super-middleweight to reign as the undisputed champion in the four-belt era, and the first from his country to be undisputed title holder in any division.
Russian Bivol, 31, enters this bout unbeaten at 19-0 with 11 knockouts to his name. Meanwhile, Canelo – also 31 – has a professional record of 57-1-2 (39 KOs), and he is targeting a trilogy bout with old rival Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo vs Bivol fight prediction
Despite his long inactivity before fighting Richards and some low-key performances on his resume, Bivol has superb technical qualities owing to his extensive amateur career.
His skills on that front are up there with the very best when he’s in rhythm, while his speed, power, and natural size will surely pose problems on Saturday night.
There is a reason Eddie Hearn rates this as Canelo’s toughest fight outside of Floyd Mayweather, with many underestimating Bivol, who has reigned as a world champion for five years but is not nearly as celebrated as the ferocious Artur Beterbiev.
Having said that, Canelo is an absolute expert in wearing down opponents and pressuring them relentlessly as fights progress.
It is easy to see Bivol starting well here in a close contest, before falling victim to the same tactics that have served the Mexican so well in the past.

Although we think Canelo will be too strong for his Russian opponent and will overcome the size difference with his sheer boxing ability and extreme movement, there is one big question mark surrounding the contest from the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night (Sunday morning GMT).
The question on everyone’s lips is whether Canelo has taken it too far with stepping up the weight divisions and whether he has possibly bitten off more than he can chew.
Standing at just 5″8 tall, Canelo is a small middleweight, never mind a light-heavyweight. Although he has beaten bigger men before, Bivol is a lot more solid and sturdy and is definitely a fully-fledged 175-pound fighter. In fact, Bivol more than likely walks around at close to 190-pounds, which is far more than the Mexican star does.
It is unlikely that Bivol gets the decision against Canelo, no matter how he performs at the weekend. Fighting on ‘Cinco De Mayo’ weekend, in Las Vegas, in front of a pro-Canelo crowd and American judges, all the signs point to a Canelo win, which isn’t the way it should be but it seems to happen quite often in boxing.
For that reason, if Bivol is to retain his WBA world light-heavyweight title at the weekend, the task is simple. He must stop Canelo and take the outcome of the fight out of the hands of the judges. If he can find his range early, assert his size and strength, and land his best shots on Canelo, the power and size difference could well tell and the Russian superstar could well get a surprise victory over the pound-for-pound king.
