Raquel Choy: All the reasons she’s a talent to be on the lookout for
Horror is more than just some gore, a killer, and a good scream. To tell a horror story, you need to make your viewers uncomfortable, and move them in a way that terrifies them. Clearly, Raquel Choy has proven herself to know this game well.
The director, producer, and writer has created buzz around herself after her short film X in 2017, and there’s no sign of stopping Choy. The indie filmmaker is riding her festival high to the bank with several upcoming projects in development. For a woman whose degree is in PR and publicity, it’s awesome to see her storytelling talents.
Humble beginnings
Like most indie creators, Raquel Choy started her filmmaking journey working with other talented filmmakers. Most notably, she worked on Memories of Alicia, a Moscow Film Festival accepted project back in 2012.
But she always wanted to drive the train to success, and got started in 2016 with The Invasion of the Symbolic Pigs. Working as the film’s executive producer, producer, director, writer, and sound editor, Choy wore all the hats while creating. It paid off though, as several festivals in Spain screened the film.
International acclaim
But her true filmmaking talent shines in her short film X. Telling the story from the mind of a psychopath, the film has been screened at festivals around the world. We can’t even begin to list the festivals that screened X, because it seems like the film was screened in every country.
Winning Best Foreign Short, Best Actor, Awards of Excellence, Best Horror Short, and plenty other accolades, it’s clear people loved X. Specifically, they loved Choy’s story and direction. Choy has great storytelling talents, especially when it comes to horror stories.
Moving up in the world
Working with her screenwriting talents, Choy is busy writing plenty of stories to be told. She pitched the TV show Anima to Cuarza Producciones, who bought the pilot and her plot ideas. No word yet on when that show will be released. She also wrote the short film script Bajo la Tierra.
Most notably though, her script writing talents are winning several script writing competitions. While she is writing a feature film and some other projects, her focus right now is on her other TV show pilot Mythos.
Recognized as a semi-finalist and silver medalist in several competitions, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Mythos become a TV show in the near future. For now though, you can check out her screenwriting talents with Joan Manel Moran’s latest short Entranas, which is currently in post production.
