Director Chi K. In. has made a name for himself with experimental horror, and his latest film 'The Entity' is following the trend.

Why ‘The Entity’ is your new horror obsession

Experimental horror can go one of two ways. Since it’s experimental, it’s either going to turn into something unique, like audiences have never seen before, or become a complete joke. Thankfully for director Chi K. In., The Entity faller under the former.

His newest short film focuses on a woman trying to uncover the truth, but what makes it experimental isn’t the plot, but the filmmaking techniques. Then again, that’s In’s style of filmmaking he’s best known for.

Taking risks that pay off

What makes The Entity stand out is the strong filmmaking experiments Chi K. In. did with the film along the way. From shooting the horror film on RED Helium 8k, to having his lead actress pull the audience in with her exhilarating performance, The Entity screams experimental horror.

But that also comes with the territory, as the film dives into some more fantasy elements at times too. Combining horror and fantasy may not be groundbreaking, but The Entity somehow manages to make it feel brand new.

Experience with experimenting

A big reason The Entity works so well is Chi K. In.’s experience with experimental horror. The LA based filmmaker believes what makes experimental horror work is strong cinematic elements. He brings that to the table with his latest film, trying to make The Entity stand out among other supernatural horror films.

The Entity is far from his first time dabbling in experimental horror. It’s what In’s best known for at this point. While his prior films he directed are more drama based, what In. has been doing as of late is working in the camera department on other experimental horror/thriller films.

Shorts like Below, Daddy’s Home, and Daughter all saw In. working in the camera department, helping nail the experimental cinematography of the film. It’s clear that this is what he is passionate about, and the genre he not only prefers, but wants to continue to innovate in.

Awards galore

Thanks to his great work on The Entity, the film festival circuit has been extremely successful for Chi K. In. The Entity saw nominations as the Hitchcock Film Awards, the Indie Short Fest, and the Los Angeles Filmmakers Showcase. And that’s far from the last praise In. will receive for the film as the festival circuit continues for The Entity

Innovation is key in experimental horror, and it’s clear that Chi K. In. is not only innovating, but bringing fresh ideas of every film he works on. The Entity may be the most recent example of his success, but it’s far from the last for the indie filmmaker.
