PLAYERS Championship Preview – The Field
It’s not a question of who is playing the PLAYERS Championship this week. 48 of the Top 50 players in the world will take on TPC Sawgrass. Anyone you can possibly imagine will try and win the biggest non-major trophy of the year. Rahm. Rory. JT. DJ. Morikawa. They’re all here.
There are a few notable omissions, however. The most notable of them is Bryson DeChambeau. Bryson is still nursing both wrist and hip injuries he sustained earlier this season. At this point, it’s likely we won’t see Bryson return to professional golf until The
Masters. Considering all his struggles at Augusta National, he’ll need to be at full strength to try and vie for the Green Jacket.
Another notable player who will miss the PLAYERS Championship is Phil Mickelson. After his controversial comments about the Saudis emerged publicly, Phil has stated that he’ll take some time away from golf. Whether this is fact or he’s secretly suspended from the PGA Tour is a whole different topic. For now, Mickelson won’t be around for the PGA Tour’s Crown Jewel tournament.
Who is in the 2022 Players Championship Field?
The 2022 Players Championship field features 48 of the top 50 players in the current World Ranking.
Harris English, Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker, and Tiger Woods are the only qualified players to not commit to the event.
How is a Players Championship Playoff Decided?
In 2014, the Players Championship began using a 3-hole aggregate playoff to determine a winner. The playoff is staged on holes 16, 17, and 18. If players are still tied after the 3-hole aggregate, the playoff shifts to a sudden-death format, beginning on the par-3 17th hole.
Since moving to the Stadium Course in 1982, only four Players Championships have been decided by a playoff: 1987, 2008, 2011, and 2015.
Thomas headlines a field that includes Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, and Collin Morikawa. Bryson DeChambeau is the main absence from the field. DeChambeau has been dealing with an injury.
The top men’s golf stars should be in the mix for the victory, but some surprise contenders could emerge.
For example, Brian Harman, Talor Gooch, and Victor Perez all landed in the top 10 of The Players in 2021 alongside Thomas, DeChambeau, and Rahm.
