Meet Popular Cosplayer Marajade Sith
Cosplay, also known as costume play, is a performance art where individuals are able to wear costumes, makeup and other accessories to replicate a specific character. This performance art is particularly popular in the United States, China and South Korea. For cosplayer and model, Marajade Sith, the platform provided opportunities to connect with people.
Marajade Sith is an American-born artist, actor, model, and retired pro-gamer. She developed a love for the performative and creative arts during her childhood years and was eager to pursue a career as Arts, Music, and Science teacher, but she had another passion, pro-gaming. At the age of 17, she was already playing at pro level, on a team for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, followed by Battlefield 2. After a few years, she decided to retire and began playing Warhammer at tournaments, of which she won 2.
Why Pursue Cosplay?
Marajade enjoys cosplaying. Many people have thought of this performative art to be quite peculiar, but it turns out that it is considered by many as a popular hobby and career that is very rewarding. When asked why she chose to pursue cosplay, she simply answered:
“Doing cosplay allowed me to be someone else for the day. Being in costume helped me come out of my shell. I wasn’t as shy talking to or meeting new people. It helped with my social anxiety. On top of that, I love creating and being characters. There’s something about bringing your favorite characters to life and putting smiles on others’ faces when they see you at cons”.
Unfortunately, in 2007, Marajade’s life changed drastically, when she was hospitalized and became severely ill. For 15 years, she found herself in and out of the hospital, with doctors running tests after tests. Amid all the bad news, she still found a way to channel her energy into something positive.
Down, but not out…
In 2013, Marajade joined the Suicidegirls as a model, a community she is still an integral part of today. She also started streaming on Twitch, a popular live-streaming platform for gamers and other lifestyle casters. She continued with her artwork too and started selling them. During all of these ventures, Marajade still struggled medically and after working on a pop culture TV show called Uncultured. In 2020 she was eventually diagnosed with multiple illnesses including an auto-immune disease and a neuromuscular disorder. Still, she used her experience to advocate for disability rights and is now becoming a recognized voice, speaking around issues regarding chronic illness and the misconceptions about autoimmune disorders.
A Day in the Life of Marajade Sith
Marajade now spends her days with her loving husband and their dogs. She also models and creates content. She tries to do as much as possible considering her health and tries to fit cosplay in where she can. It seems to be a part of her she will never really let go of. She had this to say about cosplaying, “Doing cosplay allowed me to be someone else for the day. Being in costume helped me come out of my shell, I wasn’t as shy talking to or meeting new people. It helped with my social anxiety. On top of that, I love creating and being characters. There’s something about bringing your favorite characters to life and putting smiles on others’ faces when they see you at cons”. Marajade sells her cosplay photo sets on her website, where you will also be able to view her commissioned artwork pieces, as well as some of her modeling portfolio.
She also spends quite some time creating art for commissions, finishing her dog training certificate, and making sure she makes her way down her bucket list. Marajade aims to make her way to Australia one day to continue advocating for disability rights and sharing her experience with the world. She is quite fond of dogs too and takes great joy in speaking about animal rights when she has the opportunity.
A Final Take:
Marajade Sith lives a life of inspiring hope, amid devastating circumstances. Being multi-talented, with her current diagnosis can’t be easy and has probably restricted many of her goals, but one thing that has remained untouched is her fighting spirit. Her transparency and eagerness to help others, while facing multiple challenges is admirable. She has pledged to dedicate her life to advocating for disability rights and demystifying misconceptions around auto-immune diseases.
