More than 35 years after the original Top Gun, the Tom Cruise blockbuster is getting a sequel in the form of Top Gun: Maverick. Joining a long list of much-delayed follow-ups, will Top Gun: Maverick be able to capture the magic of the original?
In the original, Top Gun (1986), a young Cruise stars as the hot-shot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, as he and his co-pilot Goose (Anthony Edwards) take part in the Navy’s top school for elite fighter pilots. Maverick likes to push it to the limit, but that ends up getting him in trouble and his confidence gets shaken following a tragic accident. But the happy ending prevails and he saves the day and gets the girl.
Top Gun: Maverick is set to hit theaters May 24, and it’s already piling up glowing reviews. But the COVID-19 pandemic, with its profound disruptions to movie-release norms, has stirred up a lot of confusion about how long fans must wait before a new movie hits a streaming service.
Top Gun: Maverick’s release date?
Top Gun: Maverick will finally arrive at cinemas in the UK on May 25, 2022 and in US cinemas on May 27, 2022.
It was originally scheduled for July 2019, but was delayed for a year due to “logistical reasons”. It was then moved once again due to the coronavirus pandemic. It is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Tom Cruise on Oblivion.
The film is based on a screenplay by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks.
How to watch Top Gun 2 for free
As with the first entry in the series, the film is initially being released exclusively in cinemas – and as such it is not currently possible to watch it online.
However, there are loads of chances to watch it on the big screen, with the film playing in hundreds of cinemas around the country following the release on Friday 27th May.

And the good news is that it looks like Top Gun 2 will be available to stream eventually, with it expected to be added to US streaming service Paramount Pictures Plus around 45 days after its theatrical debut.
Of course, this means UK fans will have to wait a little while longer – but Paramount Pictures Plus is set to launch on these shores at an as-yet-unspecified date later in 2022, available at no extra cost to Sky Cinema and NOW subscribers.
And it’s also possible it could make its way onto Netflix at some point, as is the case for the first film in the franchise – we’ll keep you updated on any news on the front here.

Top Gun 2 is currently a theatrical exclusive, meaning that if you want to watch the action movie for yourself, it is time to head to your local cineplex and start booking tickets. The movie is out now in UK cinemas, and is set to hit the US on May 27. That’s right; the wait is almost over, Tom Cruise fans!
The good news is that this date is also unlikely to change. Top Gun 2’s development has been pretty much reliable considering that the film was shot during the Covid-19 global pandemic. Since it was first announced in 2021, the sequel hasn’t suffered any major delays. So we can all relax knowing that Paramount Pictures will bring back Sonic on time.

In 2021, Paramount Pictures Studios and Disney released three feature films: Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals. However, Shang-Chi and Eternals received exclusive theatrical releases before making their streaming debuts about 68 to 70 days after their premiere.

Now that it’s 2022, has that changed? It doesn’t seem so. Top Gun 2 will only be playing in theaters when it releases on May 27, and Paramount+ has not yet confirmed when the sequel will land on Disney’s streaming platform.
However, because Top Gun 2 will likely have a 45-day theatrical run — just like Shang-Chi and Eternals — we can expect the new Paramount+ movie to follow the previous films’ example. That means viewers may be able to watch (or re-watch) Multiverse of Madness on Paramount+ as early as June 20 — if it premieres right after its 45-day theatrical window — or July 15, which is about 70 days after its May 27 release.
Is Top Gun 2 on Netflix?
Not right now—but it will be someday. While you certainly won’t see Top Gun 2 on Netflix before it releases on video-on-demand, last year Sony signed a deal to bring the studio’s 2022 film slate to Netflix during the “Pay 1 window,” which used to be 18-months after the film’s theatrical release, but could be even sooner, given that most theatrical windows have been reduced from 90 days to 45 days during the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, it’s likely you will see Top Gun 2 on Netflix in 2023.
