Katie Taylor faces Amanda Serrano in New York on Saturday night for the undisputed lightweight crown in what is the biggest women’s boxing fight of all time. The stage could not be bigger. Two of the greatest women’s fighters to have ever taken to the ring, for all the belts, at Madison Square Garden.

Taylor holds all the belts at 135lbs but now faces the toughest test of her career, two years on from when the mega-fight was first scheduled to take place. Covid put an end to those plans, with the fight bubbling in the background ever since and the fighters will now finally face off.

Both her belts and an unbeaten professional record will be on the line for Taylor, though the 35-year-old was fortunate to come away with victory on her last visit to New York. 

On the undercard of Anthony Joshua vs Andy Ruiz Jr, Taylor became undisputed at lightweight with a points win over Delfine Persoon, who many believed should have got the decision. Taylor has since beaten the Belgian again.

Serrano holds an unrivalled set of records, winning nine world titles across an incredible seven weight divisions. The 33-year-old has been a professional since 2009 and has one loss to her name, against Frida Wallberg in 2012. She has been perfect ever since though, and currently holds the WBC, WBO, and IBO belts at featherweight.

Although we think the fight will be a Taylor points victory, the unanimous decision win will get you even better odds.

Taylor has won her last six fights by unanimous decision, which we could see happening again here. With the 10 x 2 minute rounds in female world championship boxing, we think Taylor will work Serrano on the outside, not letting her get off her big shots.

Serrano has also won her last two fights by decision, but does have a high knockout ratio. ‘The Real Deal’ has 30 stoppage victories in her 42 wins, but we can’t her catching Taylor cold at all and think that Taylor may be too smart and too slick for her.

If this fight was happening two years ago, the vast majority of the boxing public would be siding with Taylor. However, as the Bray native has looked slightly less deadly and perfect in her last few performances, there are some question marks surrounding how much Taylor has left at 35-years-old.

We think this is a bit unfair on ‘KT’, who we can almost guarantee will rise to the occasion at the weekend.

As we have previously mentioned, Serrano is one of the few woman in boxing who has a devastating knockout punch.

She has stopped almost 75% of her opponents, which is more than almost every other female fighter across all of the different weight divisions.

For that reason, you simply cannot dismiss Serrano. She may well land a flurry of big shots and wobble Taylor, which could be a fight changing scenario.

If Serrano is to win, it will more than likely be by stoppage. Again, this all depends on how much Taylor has left. Although we are siding with the Irish sensation to get the job done, it would be foolish to completely write off Serrano in a fight the bookmakers cannot split and that has the boxing community divided almost perfectly in half in terms of predictions.

If Serrano can get to Taylor in the mid to late rounds, perhaps when she is behind on the scorecards and slightly chasing the fight, she may well catch Taylor and stop her on her feet.
