The Batman is out in theaters now, bringing a brand-new take on the caped crusader with Robert Pattinson under the pointy mask and Matt Reeves sitting in the director’s chair. Widely positive reviews suggest you should catch this one in the theater, but if you’re in the at-home streaming boat, here’s what you need to know about The Batman’s release on HBO Max.

Given that The Batman is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, it makes sense to expect it to swiftly hit HBO Max, thanks to the much-discussed (and derided by filmmakers) day-and-date release model. However, that model has been updated for 2022, and the streaming turnaround won’t be as quick as you might expect.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Batman’s streaming situation and how to watch online for free.

When does The Batman come out?

The Batman premieres in theaters on March 4, 2022.

Where to Watch

The film is currently available to watch in theaters and will soon be available to stream on WarnerMedia’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, HBO Max.

Will The Batman hit HBO Max?

Yes — with a but. The Batman will be available for streaming on HBO Max, but not until 45 days after its theatrical release date.

Let’s discuss Warner Bros.’ controversial “day-and-date” release plan. Last year, theater companies struck a deal with Warner Bros. to show the studio’s 2022 slate on the big screen during a 45-day window. If The Batman had kept its original 2021 release date, it might have gone straight to HBO Max. But that’s not the case.

When is The Batman coming streaming on HBO Max?

When is The Batman coming streaming? The Batman will be available to stream on HBO Max on April 19, 2022, which is 46 days after its theatrical release. WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar confirmed in an interview with Recode in December 2021 that many of Warner Bros. Pictures DC comics movies—including The Batman, Black Adam and The Flash—will have a 45-day theatrical release before they’re available to stream on HBO Max, Warner Bros.’ exclusive streaming service. “Think about when movies would show up on HBO, which is eight to nine months after theatrical premiere. The Batman is going to show up on day 46 on HBO Max,” Kilar said at the time. “That is a huge change from where things were in 2018, 2017, 2016.”

How to watch The Batman online now

How can one watch The Batman online? Starting on April 19, 2022, The Batman will be available to stream on HBO Max, which offers two plans: a $9.99 per month ad-supported plan and a $14.99 per month ad-free plan. Both plans also offer yearly subscriptions. The ad-supported plan offers a $99.99 per year subscription (which saves users about $20 from the monthly price) and the ad-free plan offers a $149.99 per year subscription (which saves users about $30 from the monthly price.) HBO Max’s ad-free plan is also available on Hulu for $14.99 per month.

What’s The Batman’s runtime?

Here’s your warning to use the bathroom before settling in for this one.

The Batman’s runtime is 2 hours and 27 minutes. That makes it the third longest superhero movie ever, behind Avengers: Endgame and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

What’s The Batman about?

Why mangle words? Here are Warner Bros.’ exact synopsis:

“In his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as the Riddler. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.”

Who’s in the cast?

Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman

Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman

Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / Riddler

Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon

John Turturro as Carmine Falcone

Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson

Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth

Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot / Penguin

‘The Batman’ To Continue To Dominate In 2nd Weekend

After making over a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide in its first weekend, The Batman goes into weekend two ready to dominate once again. Pixar’s Turning Red was scheduled for a theatrical release on March 11, but as the Omicron variant was spreading in January it was decided that the film’s release would move to Disney+ (with a theatrical run at Disney’s El Capitan Theatre). Now there are no new films going wide in the aftermath of Warner’s latest reboot of its top grossing superhero franchise, giving the film a smooth glide above the rest of the titles for the next few weeks, and possibly for the entire month of March.

By the end of the weekend or early next week, The Batman is likely to pass Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($225 million) to become the second highest grossing film at the domestic box office since the start of the pandemic, and it is already the biggest pandemic-era grosser for Warner Bros. In case there was any doubt with whether or not the higher ups at WB were happy with the gross, you can be assured by the fact that the in-development HBO Max spinoff-show The Penguin was just given a straight to series order.

Audiences showed no signs of being scared off by what is the darkest and longest film in the entire franchise, but the second weekend will be a test of whether the film has broad appeal to match the series’ highs. The positive reception for the Robert Pattinson starring film suggests at least a solid hold. The A- CinemaScore is below the A’s scored by the three films in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, but it is above Joker’s B+, Batman v Superman’s B, and Justice League’s B+. The Rotten Tomatoes rating is behind The Dark Knight but on par with Nolan’s other two and far above the Batman films in the DCEU.
