Thor: Love and Thunder are almost ready to bolt into theaters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie arrives in cinemas worldwide in early July, so there really isn’t too much longer to wait for the Norse god’s next solo outing.

The movie will follow Thor (Hemsworth) as he is on a self-discovery journey, until the plans of villain Gorr the God Butcher, which, as his name suggests, is trying to kill all the Gods, interfere with his time-off. With the help of old friends, including his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who now is the Mighty Thor, he will have to once again save the day.

With the recent tease of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who said that the revelation of where this saga is going will happen soon, fans won’t want to miss this next chapter in the franchise. Thor: Love and Thunder release date

Thor: Love and Thunder will be released in theaters on Friday, July 8. Well, in the US and most international territories. The film comes out a day earlier (Thursday, July 7) in the UK(opens in new tab) and India(opens in new tab).

Before the official trailer dropped, the film’s runtime has reportedly been revealed ahead of schedule. Two different sources – UK cinema chain Cineworld and Australian ticket outlet Event Cinemas – suggested it would be 140 minutes(opens in new tab)(2 hours and 20 minutes) or 115 minutes(opens in new tab) (1 hour 55 minutes) in length.

Unsurprisingly, Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor. Some of his New Asgardian friends will be joining Odinson, with Tessa Thompson reprising her role as Valkyrie, and director Taika Waititi climbing back into his performance capture suit to play wannabe revolutionary Korg. According to Reddit(opens in new tab), Hemsworth’s own son Tristan portrays the boy version of the Norse god in the film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy will also show up in Thor: Love and Thunder, which isn’t a complete shock. Avengers: Endgame, well, ended with Thor in the company of Marvel’s most beloved bunch of a-holes, so they’ll feature in some capacity. According to MCU leaker NoobMaster69(opens in new tab), they’ll only appear in about 15 minutes’ worth of footage. Per Guardians director James Gunn(opens in new tab), a couple of things were also “adjusted” – likely from character arc and plot perspectives – to help their roles in Thor 4 tie into Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3.

Natalie Portman also returns as Doctor Jane Foster, with the actress agreeing to reprise her role after a single meeting with Waititi (per Variety(opens in new tab)) as long as he reinvented her character. Obviously, part of that reworking saw Portman pack on serious muscle for the role, with Portman telling Variety(opens in new tab) that it was “an amazing challenge” to bulk up to play Foster’s superpowered alter-ego.

Thor: Love and Thunder story: what’s it about?

Here’s the official plot synopsis, courtesy of Marvel Studios: “Thor: Love and Thunder find Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey, unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods.

“To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.”

Unsurprisingly, Thor: Love and Thunder pick up sometime after Avengers: Endgame, with Thor being overweight and teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy before he heads off on an intergalactic adventure. It’s one positioned as a romantic comedy by Waititi, too, who told Fandango(opens in new tab) that An Officer and a Gentleman, as well as Bob Seger songs, chiefly influenced the film’s story.

 Official plot synopsis, teaser trailer, and Waititi’s comments aside, though, Marvel is understandably (and rightly) playing its cards close to its chest when it comes to Thor 4’s overarching narrative. But that won’t stop us from speculating about what will play out.
