Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is opening in theaters this Friday. Taking place a few months after the events of the multiverse chaos that was Spider-Man: No Way Home, Marvel’s latest finds Dr. Stephen Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) exploring the strange new universes now available to him. 

He teams up with another Marvel favorite, Scarlet Witch (played by Elisabeth Olson), who is dealing with the fallout of her actions in the Disney+ series, WandaVision. Good thing, too, because Strange needs all the help he can get to face off with his old adversary, Karl Mordo (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor).

You don’t want to miss this next chapter in the superhero story, so here’s what you need to know about where to watch Doctor Strange 2, and when to expect Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness streaming on Disney+.

WHERE TO WATCH DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS:

For now, the only place to watch Doctor Strange 2 is in a movie theater when it opens on May 6. It is not available on streaming. You can find showtime at a movie theater near you here.

WHEN WILL DOCTOR STRANGE 2 BE STREAMING ON DISNEY PLUS?

Though an official digital release date has not been announced, we can guess that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be available to buy and rent on digital platforms, as well as streaming on Disney+, after about two months, or 70 days in theaters.

Two previous Marvel releases, Eternals and Shang-Chi had about a 70-day exclusive run in theaters and then became available to stream for free on Disney+. Eternals opened in theaters on November 5 and became available to purchase on digital and free on Disney+ on January 12, about 10 weeks in theaters.

If Doctor Strange follows a similar pattern, you will have to wait until July 2022 to watch Doctor Strange 2 on streaming.

WILL DOCTOR STRANGE 2 BE ON HBO MAX?

No. Doctor Strange 2 is a Disney movie and not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be on HBO Max at the same time it is in theaters. More than that, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. Last year, Warner Media opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.

What Is “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” About?

“Multiverse of Madness” takes place after both “WandaVision” and “Spider-Man No Way Home,” in which viewers get a small taste of multiversal crossovers. After casting a forbidden spell (intended to help Tom Holland’s Peter Parker regain his anonymity) that opens up the multiverse, in which alternate realities can exist alongside each other, Dr. Strange (Cumberbatch) seeks the help of Wanda Maximoff (Olsen), who has experience in different realities, to combat all the new threats he has summoned, including a sinister version of himself. 

Mordo (Ejiofor) uses this to justify his new mission to rid the world of the “too many” wizards it has. America Chavez enters the MCU in this film with her ability to hop between dimensions, on the run from forces after her powers.

Who is Making Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Sam Raimi’s involvement as the director for Doctor Strange 2 was confirmed in April 2020. The movie was originally set to be directed by Scott Derrickson (who also directed the first movie). Derrickson reportedly wanted to take the movie in a very horror-oriented direction, but he eventually left the project citing creative differences with Marvel Studios.

At that point, Jade Bartlett had already been hired to write the screenplay in October 2019. Loki’s head writer Michael Waldron was hired to write Doctor Strange 2 in February 2020. Once Waldron and Raimi were brought on board, they then came up with a new script from scratch. In June 2021, Waldron told Collider’s Steve Weintraub that the COVID shutdown helped him and Raimi figure out exactly what they wanted from the movie.

Waldron also told the Friends From Work podcast that the additional time allowed him and Bartlett to take things in a “slightly scarier direction”.

Besides Waldron, Raimi has also collaborated with a few key figures in the industry for this project. One of them is Danny Elfman, who composed the score for Doctor Strange 2. Elfman and Raimi have previously worked on Raimi’s first two Spider-Man movies, as well as the 1990 superhero noir movie Darkman. Elfman also previously worked in the MCU on the score for Avengers: Age of Ultron alongside Brian Tyler.

Another important member of the crew is cinematographer John Mathieson, who is Doctor Strange 2’s director of photography. His previous credits include Gladiator, Logan, and X-Men: First Class, just to name a few.

The movie’s cast has offered a lot of praise for Raimi’s direction. Benedict Wong, for example, has talked about how the filmmaker encourages improvisation.

Benedict Cumberbatch has also praised the collaborative spirit on set, and he described the director as “an incredible force”.
