The talent of Ethan Hawke in front of the camera and the prestige of Universal Studios joined forces to bring to life producer Jason Blum and director Scott Derrickson’s concept, a suspense thriller rather than a horror thriller that they decided to present as “The Black Phone”.

The creepiest (and best) moments in the kiddie-kidnap horror pic “The Black Phone” take full advantage of the movie’s basic setup: a suburban teen gets abducted and then struggles to escape his captor’s sound-proof basement.

That scenario, co-adapted from a Joe Hill (“NOS4A2”) short story by director Scott Derrickson (“Doctor Strange”) and co-writer C. Robert Cargill, folds neatly into the mini-trend of quasi-nostalgic horror-adventures that both “Stranger Things” and the 2017 “It” adaptation brought back into vogue.

Derrickson and Cargill successfully tailor their focused and mostly compelling narrative to a Steven Spielberg/Amblin Entertainment–esque bit of Stephen King–sploitation. (King, as it happens, is author Hill’s dad.) There’s nothing in “The Black Phone” that you can’t also get in more inventive recent King adaptations (like “Doctor Sleep”) or King-like homages.

When Will The Black Phone Be Released?

The film originally premiered at Fantastic Fest 2021 and was scheduled to screen in January. However, it will be available in theaters starting June 24.

The story stems from a 2014 story by Joe Hill and focuses on the young teenager Finney Shaw, who despite being a talented baseball player, is constantly the victim of violence inflicted on his person by other classmates, but also by his own father, a hardened alcoholic.

What Is The Black Phone About?

The Black Phone twists the typical abduction story on its head. The film is set in the 1970s in the suburbs of Colorado, where kids are being hunted down by a serial killer known as The Grabber. Enter young Finney Shaw, who after being tricked by the Grabber disguised as a magician, is kidnapped and locked away in a soundproof basement. The young abductee finds an old disconnected black phone and learns of its ability to transmit the voices of all of the Grabber’s young victims who want to help him escape.
