How can you watch The Northman? Now that he’s done witches and weird men in lighthouses, Robert Eggers has taken the next logical step and made an action movie about Vikings.

Not just any regular historical epic, though. This is an Eggers production, after all, and The Northman promises a dark, brutal, tale of vengeance, inspired by Amleth, a Scandinavian legend that was a direct inspiration to William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Alexander Skarsgard plays Amleth, a Viking prince who wants revenge on the man who killed his father.

Told across the span of Amleth’s life, The Northman is the largest Eggers film to date, with a star-studded cast, including Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and Björk, and going by the trailers, plenty of bloody violence. An Eggers project is cause for celebration anyway, but one at this scale makes it a proper cinematic event. When can you see what they’ve all gotten up to? Is it possible to stream the adventure movie instead of going to a theatre? We’ve done all the seafaring so you don’t have to!

When Is The Northman’s Release Date?

Hailing from Focus Features, The Northman has been given an April 15 UK release date and an April 22 US release date in movie theaters. The movie will play exclusively in movie theaters upon its initial release, however, we do have a pretty good idea of when it will head to streaming and we know exactly where that will be as well (at least in the US).

Following an announcement by NBCUnivesral, all Focus Feature movies will get their streaming debuts on the Peacock platform (owned by NBCU) 45 days (at the earliest) after they are released in movie theaters. Peacock Premium, which provides full access to all Peacock content, costs either $4.99 per month (ad-supported) or $9.99 per month (ad-free).

Where to Watch the Northman Online

The Northman is screening exclusively in UK cinemas from Friday, April 15th, whereas US audiences can catch it in theaters from Friday, April 22nd 2022.

So, the big screen is the only place to check out the movie upon initial release and there is no streaming information as of yet. It will likely be made available as a rental on the likes of iTunes and Amazon Video as soon as the theatrical window has closed.

As for what to expect, this vicious tale of revenge focuses on Prince Amleth, whose father is killed when he’s on the cusp of adulthood. Fast forward twenty years and he is now a powerful Viking with a vow he is determined to fulfil.

Tasked with avenging his father, murdering his uncle and saving his mother, a bloody quest begins.

Is The Northman on Netflix

Yes, but it won’t be coming anytime soon. In fact, if you solely use Netflix, you’ve got years to wait before it becomes available.

The reason it’s coming to Netflix is thanks to an expansive deal Netflix struck with Universal in 2021 which means that all Universal movies come to Netflix albeit with live-action movies coming much later after a theatrical release.

Is The Northman on Hulu?

No, ‘The Northman’ is not available on Hulu. However, the platform has an excellent selection of movies that you can check out, such as the Kristen Stewart-starrer ‘Happiest Season‘ or ‘Before Midnight.’ Although slightly different in tone, both these films beautifully weave elements of romance and family drama.

Is The Northman on Amazon Prime?

While Amazon Prime does not host ‘The Northman,’ its vast video library will not let you down. Use your Prime membership to watch gems like ‘The Big Sick‘ and ‘Little Miss Sunshine.’ If you enjoy films where the narrative is driven by quirky family members, you will enjoy the aforementioned titles.

Is The Northman on HBO Max?

If you are looking forward to watching ‘The Northman,’ HBO Max is not the place for you. Fortunately, the platform does offer similar films like ‘Crazy Rich Asians‘ and the evergreen classic ‘Dirty Dancing.’ Romance and family are prominent themes in these movies, quite like the Dianna Agron and Dustin Hoffman-starrer.

Who’s in the cast?

The cast of The Northman is filled with Hollywood stars, including Alexander Skarsgard who is playing the role of Amleth, and helped create the movie with director, Robert Eggers.

The actor, known for his – unrelated – role as Eric Northman in True Blood, will be the lead in the new film alongside Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) playing the role of Olga of the Birch Forest, a sorceress who embarks on a romantic relationship with Amleth.

Skarsgard said that his first day on set for the film was “emotional” as he had created the project alongside Eggers from its inception.

Amelth’s mother is played by Nicole Kidman, and his uncle by Danish actor Claes Bang.

Ethan Hawke plays King Aurvandill while other roles of note include Bjork as the Seeress, Willem Dafoe as Heimir, Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones) as Halldora, and Swedish actor Gustav Lindh as Thorir.

What is The Northman About?

The Northman takes place in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century and revolves around Nordic prince Amleth (Skarsgård) who seeks revenge against his uncle Fjölnir (Bang) for the murder of his father. What follows is a tale of family, vengeance, and Viking mysticism. Although The Northman is written by Eggers and Icelandic poet and novelist Sjón Sigurdsson, there are some plot elements that might sound familiar to eagle-eyed viewers. But is The Northman a strictly fictional tale, or are there elements of truth to the story? Let’s take a deep dive into Eggers’ inspiration, Scandinavian folk tales, and Viking lore to find out.
