Who’s In The Voice Cast Of Turning Red?

Voicing the intelligent and enthusiastic Mei is Rosalie Chiang, a young newcomer known for her role as the lead in 2018 short Soiled. Turning Red is Chiang’s first voice acting role.

Starring alongside Chiang is Sandra Oh of Grey’s Anatomy. Oh is Ming Lee, Mei’s overprotective mother who tries to keep an ever-watchful eye on her strong-willed and self-assured daughter.

Mei’s father Jin Lee is voiced by Orion Lee, who is best known for his role as King-Lu in the soulful 2019 film First Cow. Lee has also been spotted in various action films, such as The Last Jedi and Skyfall.

Hyein Park voices Abby, Mei’s tough and excitable purple-clad pal who finds Mei in her panda form to be “so cute!” This is Park’s first acting role, having previously worked as a storyboard artist for various animated films, including Disney’s Toy Story 4 and Soul. In addition to lending her voice to Turning Red, Park is an animation story artist for the film.

‘Turning Red’ Review:

“Turning Red” (on Disney+ March 11) is especially tricky. Because that’s the idea behind this sometimes heartwarming but wayward coming-of-age movie, which toes the line between truthfully representing a Chinese family, flaws and all, and indulging stereotypes.

Meilin Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang) is a typical 13-year-old girl: She dances, has crushes on boys, and has a cohort of weird but loyal besties who share her obsession with the glossy-lipped members of the boy band 4*Town. She’s also Chinese Canadian, living in Toronto in 2002, where her family maintains a temple. There she helps her loving but overbearing mother, Ming (Sandra Oh), and tries to be the perfect daughter — even when that means burying her own thoughts and desires in the process. This becomes a lot more difficult when she goes through her changes — not of the period variety, but the panda kind.

The character writing and design are where “Turning Red,” directed by Domee Shi, most succeeds. Mei has the relatable swagger of the middle school cool nerd — she’s creative and confident, and also has a perfect report card.
