AFC Preview:Buffalo Bills (13-3) vs Kansas City Chiefs ( 14-2)
The Bills have enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they must head out on the road. Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium at 6:40 p.m. ET, they and the Kansas City Chiefs will grapple for the AFC championship and a ticket to the Super Bowl. The Bills will be seeking to avenge the 26-17 loss they suffered the last time these two teams played Oct. 19 of last year.
Bills earned some more postseason success in their contest last week. They were able to grind out a solid victory over the Baltimore Ravens, winning 17-3. The score was all tied up at the break 3-3, but Buffalo was the better team in the second half. Their WR Stefon Diggs filled up the stat sheet, catching eight passes for one TD and 106 yards.
In the meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns typically have all the answers at home, but last week Kansas City proved too difficult a challenge. Kansas City managed a 22-17 win over Cleveland. The team accrued 19 points in the first half and coasted on those for the win. It was another big night for the Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes, who passed for one TD and 255 yards on 30 attempts in addition to punching in one rushing touchdown. Mahomes ended up with a passer rating of 152.40.

The Buccaneers are the only underdog to make it to the NFL’s final four, but it’s hard to consider them much of a longshot when they’re loaded with talent and led by legendary quarterback Tom Brady. In their upset win over the New Orleans Saints they proved they could win with their defense, but that will be harder to do against probable MVP Aaron Rodgers and a Packers team that scored a league-best 509 points during the regular season.
This is the first ever playoff matchup between Brady and Rodgers as both plied their trade in separate conferences for their cumulative 37 NFL seasons until this season. Some might think this duel is too little, too late considering the two Hall of Fame locks have a combined age of 80, but both are at the top of their respective games. Rodgers led the league in touchdown passes (48) and passer rating (121.5) this season, while Brady’s passing yards (4,633) and touchdown (40) totals were in the top three. As far as quarterback matchups go, it doesn’t get much better.

Expect constant updates on Patrick Mahomes and his recovery from a concussion he suffered against the Cleveland Browns. The health of the Chiefs’ franchise player will be crucial to how this game plays out. If he’s unavailable, it will be borderline-impossible for backup Chad Henne to lead the defending champs past a Bills team that’s dropped just one game since a two-game skid in mid-October.
Assuming Mahomes is good to go, we could be looking at a classic. Both teams run intricate modern offenses that emphasize early down passing and are driven by extremely talented mobile quarterbacks with improvisational flair. Each defense will be stretched to its limit. It’s not hard to imagine a Mahomes–Josh Allen duel coming down to the final possession, with the last team to possess the ball in the driver’s seat.
When these teams met on October 19, the Chiefs won 26-17 behind an efficient performance from a massive 162-yard rushing day from Clyde Edwards-Helaire and an outstanding defensive effort that led to Allen passing for just 122 yards. That’s a recipe for success that Kansas City will be unlikely to replicate considering Edwards-Helaire is hobbled and Allen is too good to be bottled up that thoroughly twice. That means the Chiefs will have to go with their usual strategy of lighting up the scoreboard with an explosive passing attack — as long as Mahomes is OK.
Who’s going to win Super Bowl LV
With the Mahomes health caveat, the Chiefs should remain favorites to retain their title. Andy Reid’s offense is well-crafted and the club’s skill position players have incredible speed, making them a nightmare to defend. On defense they create turnovers and get after the quarterback at a respectable clip, making life difficult for opposing passing attacks. They are far from perfect, but they are well-coached, talented, and consistent.
FiveThirtyEight’s championship probabilities are as follows

Packers 29%
Chiefs 27%
Bills 26%
Buccaneers 18%
